Not all mesh is the same

"Mesh" covers everything from a fine, almost invisible structure to a coarse net with finger-wide openings. For the wearer that makes a big difference — in transparency, but also in how it feels.

• Fine micro-mesh: visible up close, barely from two metres away. Light, very breathable, pleasant on the skin — the usual choice for sports tank tops and for underwear meant to cool.
• Classic net: visible openings, clear transparency. The classic for party looks and for underwear that is meant to show.
• Coarse net: wide openings, heavier yarn, and therefore sturdier than it looks. This is no longer about cooling but about effect — typical of the AD Fetish line.

How transparent is it really?

Three factors decide: the opening size, the colour and the stretch. Dark colours read far more opaque than light ones — a white mesh shirt shows almost everything, the same model in black hardly anything. And every elastic net becomes more transparent when stretched. If you are unsure, start with a dark model in a fine structure.

What mesh is good for

Sport

In training, mesh is not a fashion detail but a function: the open structure moves moisture away and cools. That is why many sports tank tops use mesh panels at the back and sides.

Summer and beach

Worn over swim shorts, a mesh tank is the lightest top there is — it cools and dries in seconds.

Party and club

This is where mesh plays its real part. Combined with a jockstrap or a harness it creates the look the brand is known for.

How mesh is made — and why that matters

Mesh is not woven but knitted: the threads are looped into stitches rather than crossed at right angles. Everything else follows from that. A knit stretches in every direction, does not fray at a cut edge, and drapes around the body instead of pulling. The price difference between cheap and good mesh lies in the yarn and the stitch density: finer yarn at the same stitch count gives a softer hand, denser stitches give more recovery. You can spot cheap mesh by the fact that it does not fully retract after stretching — bulges stay at the knees, elbows or seat.

What to look for when buying

• Elastane content: below 5% the piece goes shapeless, above 15% it can constrict. The usual good range is 8–12%.
• Edge finishing: clean flatlock seams or a bound edge will hold; simply cut edges curl after a few washes.
• Waistband on underwear: a wide, woven band spreads the tension — with fine mesh it matters more than with firm cotton, because the net itself gives little support.
• Colour and purpose: black and dark navy are versatile; white and pastels are considerably more transparent than they look in a product photo.

Combining: what goes with mesh

A mesh tank over swim shorts is the simplest summer combination and works on almost any beach. For the evening the rule of thumb is: one statement piece is enough. Pair a coarse net shirt with plain dark trousers, not with a second statement layer. Conversely, a fine micro-mesh shirt wears easily under an open shirt — then it is texture rather than statement. For club and party the classic trio of mesh top plus jockstrap plus shorts is hard to beat: it sits, it keeps you warm enough, and it can be reduced in seconds.

Care: mesh is more delicate than it looks

The stitches only keep their shape while the elastane stays intact. So: 30 °C, delicate cycle, laundry bag, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer. Coarse net likes to catch on zips — wash it separately or in a bag. And do not iron: heat melts the fine fibres and creates hard, shiny patches that cannot be undone.

Common questions about mesh and net

Does coarse net scratch? Good net does not — the hand comes from the yarn, not the opening size. Cheap polyester with a high twist can feel rough; a softly spun yarn stays pleasant even with wide openings.

Does mesh keep you warm in autumn? Surprisingly yes, worn under another layer: the air in the openings insulates. As a single layer it cools, in combination it warms — which is why mesh long-sleeves work outside summer too.

Does mesh underwear show through trousers? Fine micro-mesh does not; coarse net under thin fabric does — the structure shows as a pattern. Under jeans both are invisible.

How long does a mesh piece last? With proper care, several years. What kills mesh is the tumble dryer: the heat makes the elastane brittle, and then individual stitches break — a hole that cannot be stopped.
